Pathway Sports - Exciting Variations of Modern Pentathlon
There are so many great ways to build up to a full Modern Pentathlon or for modern pentathletes to get competition practice for certain elements of the sport with the exciting sub-sports.
UIPM Modern Pentathlon

Modern Pentathlon is seen as the highest point of the sport that athletes work towards. The competition consists of the five disciplines of swimming, fencing, obstacle and the combined event of running and shooting. The obstacle phase was previously show jumping, and some events may still offer this in Victoria.
UIPM Tetrathlon

Tetrathlon is the last step before being able to compete fully in modern pentathlon. The Tetrathlon consists of 4 of the 5 sports – swimming, fencing, running and shooting. The Tetrathlon is the event that young pentathletes compete in.
UIPM Obstacle Triathle/OCR Tetrathlon

This is a variation to Tetrathlon since the inclusion of obstacles to the sport – swimming, obstacles, running and shooting. OCR Tetrathlon is a good introduction to the sport for athletes transitioning from other sports such as obstacle course racing and triathlon.
Pony Club Tetrathlon

Pony Club Tetrathlon is another pathway to modern pentathlon. Pony Club Tetrathlon consists of riding, swimming, running and shooting. The Tetrathlon aims to allow Pony Club riders to combine athletic events with their passion for riding.
Obstacle Laser Run

Introduced as a UIPM University sport, obstacle laser run gives athletes of all ages a transition event towards Modern Pentathlon, athletes complete the obstacle followed by laser run with handicap start based on scores as in pentathlon.
Triathle

Triathle is a development initiative by UIPM where athletes compete in a shoot-run-swim-run continuous competition introduced as a beach or open water sport though can be adapted for a pool event.
Obstacle Biathle

UIPM Obstacle Biathle introduced as a beach sport, especially for young athletes coming across from ‘nippers’ or triathlon. It involves run, swim and obstacle racing.

Laser Run

Laser Run combines Running and Shooting in fast-paced and dynamic races including 3-5 rounds of laser pistol shooting from 5 to 10 meters distance and 3-5 times run from 300m to 600m. Athletes have to hit in the green on a target 5 times before they can run.
