Calculating age for events:

Age categories for this event are calculated CURRENT YEAR – BIRTH YEAR i.e. birth year 2012.

2026 – 2012 = 14 Competition Category – Under 15. Months & days are not taken into account.

Athletes may compete in an age group above their age if desired and be eligible for awards in that category. Minimum age for this event 9 years.

All genders may compete together in the various phases. Awards separated by gender – male/female in each age category.

This event includes Fencing, Obstacle, Swim and Laser Run. The rules of this event are based on the current UIPM rules, found at: https://www.uipmworld.org/sites/default/files/uipm_competition_rules_and_equipment_regulations.pdf

There may be some variations to these rules to accommodate the practical considerations of the venues and experience levels of the athletes in the competition.

Modern Pentathlon, scores will be calculated by combining the points from each discipline as per the table above.

FENCING for U11, U13 and U15 competitors is optional for this event. However, the U11, U13, U15 age groups, athletes may compete in the main poule - older age group fencers. The fencing scores for U11, U13, U15 will NOT be counted towards their overall Modern Pentathlon points. A separate fencing award for the highest fencing score in the combined group - U11, U13, U15, will be awarded. If there are adequate numbers of fencers a ‘Novice’ poule will be considered.

Athletes wanting their fencing score included in the Modern Pentathlon points, must enter & compete, in U17, U19, Junior, Senior or Masters categories. Except for Masters competitions, a pentathlete may compete in the age group immediately higher than their age group. E.g. An under 15 competitor that wishes to have a fencing score included in their Modern Pentathlon points would need to compete as an U17 athlete in all phases.

Eligibility

Modern Pentathlon - anyone is eligible to enter the above competitions, however only current financial MP members with Full Athlete membership are eligible for Modern Pentathlon Championship awards. (State Modern Pentathlon events are a requirement to participate in National Modern Pentathlon events.)
Laser Run - can be completed with no prior experience and is being offered to those new or returning to the sport to be involved.
Fencing - it is expected you have done some prior fencing, such as Development training days offered throughout the year or as a club fencer. External/club fencers are invited and encouraged to enter the fencing for extra experience and build numbers in the poule.

All athletes are encouraged to be a member of Modern Pentathlon Victoria; A Trialist Membership allows you to compete/participate in most Modern Pentathlon events in Australia for 3 months & can be upgraded to a Full membership. Note: Trialist membership NOT eligible for Championship Awards.
